Although Krk has been inhabited since prehistoric times, the Roman administration of the island left us numerous monuments all over the island which we can still see today!

Roman remains in the city of Krk

The city of Krk keeps the greatest number of sights from the Roman period. Certainly the oldest Roman monument is the preserved city ramparts dating back to the 4th century BC, and the record of these walls was written during the great naval battle of Juliet Caesar and Pompey in the sea around Krk, where Caesar's fleet suffered a great defeat.

Witnesses to the rich history and cultural life of Krk during the Romans are: the remains of thermal baths, the temple of Venus, the mosaic of Triton, as well as numerous smaller fragments that can be found in the city.

Roman town Fulminum near Omišalj

A few kilometers from today's Omisalj lies the Roman town of Fulminum, a rich archaeological site on the open. City there was a relatively short period of time, from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. And it was no longer upgraded, so today we can see how an authentic Roman city from the beginning of the new era looked like!

Locality Sv. Petar - Kanajt/Punat

In the earlier Roman remains the church was built in the 6th century. As it was not maintained, within the ruins of an older, larger church, in the Middle Ages a new, smaller church of St. Peter was built. This is a unique example of such construction and a very interesting location to visit during your stay on the island of Krk!

Roman remains in Baška

Although the first association after mentioning Baska is oldest Croatian monument, Baska Tablet, found in Jurandvor, in Baska we can find the remains of the Roman presence even 1,000 years older than the Baska tablet.

Even though it can not be said that Baška was a populated place during Roman times, there was a Roman cemetery that was considered to be closely related to Roman descent in the area of today's town of Senj, located on the coast opposite Baška.

After the arrival of the Croats in this area, center stands out as a commercial, religious and cultural center, particularly important for the oldest records in the Croatian language. By staying on the island you will feel its rich history, which largely builds on its Roman beginnings.

Because of its role in Croatia's national history, the visit to Baska and the island in general is unavoidable for all true lovers of history, and staying at a holiday home on Krk is the perfect starting point for your research!
